The temperatures are dropping and it’s time to break out your favorite boots! Boots are a cold weather staple, but they require some extra TLC to keep them in top shape throughout the seasons. Follow these tips to care for your leather, suede, and other boots this fall and winter.
Waterproofing:
One of the biggest enemies of boots in cold weather is moisture. Salt, snow, slush, and rain can all damage the material and lead to cracks, discoloration and warped shape.
Use a spray-on waterproofing product to protect your boots. Apply 2-3 light, even coats allowing time to dry in between. For extreme conditions, a wax-based waterproofer will repel more moisture, but use sparingly as it can alter the look and feel of the leather. Reapply waterproofing treatments whenever they seem to be losing effectiveness.
Cleaning:
Don’t let dirt, salt stains, and grime ruin your boots. Remove debris with a soft brush after each wear once boots have dried. For smooth leather, use a leather cleaner and then condition well to restore moisture. Suede can be gently brushed with a suede brush or eraser to lift dirt from the nap. For tough stains, use a suede cleaner and scrub gently before drying.
Be sure to fully dry boots before putting them into storage. Never put wet boots away! The moisture can lead to mold, mildew, cracking and other damage.
Storage:
Speaking of storage, be sure you store boots properly between wears. Allow them to fully air dry, and use cedar shoe trees to draw out any lingering moisture and retain the shape. Keep boots away from direct heat, and store in breathable dust bags or boxes to prevent scuffs and damage. The right storage will keep your boots looking their best for many seasons.
